Founder Q/A — What Was the Moment You Realized You Had to Create BEB Organic?

Interview by Jan Davidson, head of BEB Organic customer service. She hears all the questions and interviews Kim to get you answers!

From NICUs to nurseries, a founder’s journey in redefining baby skincare.

Q: Was there a single lightbulb moment that sparked the creation of BEB Organic?

A: Honestly, no. BEB wasn’t born from a single flash of insight—it came from three defining moments across my life. Each one deepened my understanding of what skincare really means, especially for the most medically fragile babies. Together, they shaped not just the idea for BEB Organic, but the mission behind it.

1. Touch Therapy and the First Preemie I Ever Loved

I was 19 years old, volunteering for a family whose son had been born prematurely and was now living with autism. They were exploring touch therapy to support his neurodevelopment, and I was part of that journey.

I still remember the feel of his skin—how delicate it was. How every gentle touch felt like it mattered. I didn’t know then that this little boy would become one of the most influential people in my life. But he was.

That experience stayed with me because it taught me something I’d never forget: touch is not just nurturing—it's therapeutic. And that’s especially true for babies born too soon, before their skin is fully developed. When you’re born prematurely, your skin isn’t just fragile—it’s still forming.

At the time, I already had a deep knowledge of skincare, thanks to my family’s work. My father founded Epicuren, a pioneering skincare company known for its science-forward approach to skin health. So I grew up immersed in formulation labs, product testing, and conversations about active ingredients and healing.

That combination—my early education in skincare and my emotional experience with touch therapy—laid the foundation for everything BEB would one day become.

2. Founding My First Baby Skincare Brand—and Learning What Really Matters

More than a decade later, I was pregnant with my first child and running a children’s skincare company I had founded. It was one of the most fulfilling times in my life. One of my favorite parts of the work was what we created for hospitals—free educational kits for staff and families, designed to empower parents with science-based information and gentle care routines.

To me, skincare wasn’t just about soft skin. It was about giving parents the tools to connect with their babies through nurturing, intentional touch. Those little routines—cleansing, moisturizing, massage—they become rituals. Moments of connection. Opportunities to bond.

But when that company was sold, the new owners didn’t see value in those hospital initiatives. They were expensive, resource-intensive, and hard to quantify in terms of immediate ROI. So they were dropped.

I was so sad about that.

While it broke my heart to see that support for families go away, it clarified my purpose. If I wanted to keep supporting medically fragile babies and the families who love them, I’d have to build something new. Something that honored the science, the care, and the connection.

And that “something” became BEB Organic.

3. Answering the Call from the NICU

The third moment came when people in the medical community—the ones I most admired—asked me to create it.

Over the years, pediatricians, NICU nurses, and neonatal specialists had been quietly asking:

“Can you make something specifically for preemies?”
“Can you formulate a wash that doesn’t sting and a cream that actually supports skin barrier development?”
“Can you give us a better option than what’s on the market?”

It wasn’t about making another natural brand. It was about creating skincare that could hold up in a medical setting. That would be safe enough for preemies, clean enough for families, and effective enough for hospitals to trust.

So, I said yes.

I brought everything I knew—from years of formulation science to my personal experience with touch therapy—and collaborated with a panel of pediatric dermatologists, NICU nurses, midwives, and researchers. Together, we created skincare that:

  • Starts with preemies as the baseline for safety

  • Uses ingredients that are EWG top-rated and allergy-tested

  • Maintains a skin-neutral pH to protect the skin barrier

  • Supports the microbiome from day one

  • Leverages touch as a developmental tool, not just a cosmetic gesture

That’s the foundation of BEB Organic. It’s not just skincare. It’s a system of care.

Q: Why does this mission still matter so much to you now?

A: Because this work is personal—and urgent.

Babies born prematurely are especially vulnerable. Their skin is up to 30% thinner than full-term babies’ skin. Their microbiome is still forming. Their nervous system is still wiring itself together. And everything we do—every touch, every product—has the power to support or hinder that process.

When we apply skincare thoughtfully, we aren’t just hydrating or protecting—we’re facilitating neurodevelopment. That might sound lofty for a lotion or a diaper balm, but it’s true. Every touch becomes a message to the brain: You are safe. You are loved. You belong here.

At BEB, we think about skincare as a bridge between the parent and the baby. It’s a way to rebuild confidence, reduce fear, and create daily rituals that feel grounding—especially when everything feels fragile or uncertain.

Q: What’s your hope for the future of BEB Organic?

A: I hope we continue to expand what care means.

Yes, we’ll keep growing our product line. Yes, we’ll keep deepening our scientific work around neurodevelopment and touch. But most importantly, we’ll keep supporting families in meaningful ways—whether that’s through our Tiny Steps program for NICU graduates, our hospital partnerships, or our ongoing education efforts.

Because when a brand is built from love, science, and lived experience, it doesn’t just sell products—it creates change.

And that’s what BEB Organic was always meant to do.

With love,
